Dovid Birk wanted to tell us about some of the work he and two other Mayanot alumni are up to. Check it out! (Also, don't forget to check out this video introducing his organization: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylZ0X9EJC_Y)
When Dovid Birk (Mayanot Alumnus) finished high school in Perth, Australia, it was customary amongst his group of friends to take a “year off” - meaning from academia - and to travel, have fun and learn about the world. After working for 8 months, Michoel Ogince (Mayanot Alumnus) and Dovid sat down on a Yom Kippur day and discussed their dreams. They weren’t even very close friends, but had one thing in common - outdoor adventure.
From that little discussion, they decided right there and then, to travel to New Zealand together at the end of 1998. And so they did. A lifelong friendship was forged, and together with that, a love of photographing a most intriguing world was born in both of them.
In 2008, Michoel, living in Morristown, New Jersey, whilst studying in yeshiva, began collecting his photos and sharing them with friends and family. Shortly after getting married he initiated a very unique kind of weekly e-mail. The goal: To challenge himself and his audience to see G-d and G-dly ideas in the world around. The camera was the tool, the photograph was the forum, and chassidus was the inner content. He began what is now known as Oneinfocus (www.oneinfocus.org).
The website and weekly e-mail has become the largest Torah photographic that exclusively uses original digital media to share inner G-dly truths about the world. Oneinfocus adopts the Baal Shem Tov’s directive of utilizing all things that we see, hear and are exposed to, as personal, and potent lessons in Avodas Hashem.
In May this year, Dovid and Miri Birk (Mayanot Alumni) joined the Oneinfocus team. Dovid and Miri hope to explore and expand the Oneinfocus platform and use more creative methods to spread the message of the Baal Shem Tov.
Oneinfocus’ main activity to date has been a weekly erev shabbos e-mail that circulates literally around the world. The e-mail reaches a few thousand people, being re-distributed by shluchim and friends. Oneinfocus invites you to join in on the action and sign up for free at www.oneinfocus.org.
